In one aspect, a wireless mesh network comprises ultra-high-capacity nodes that are capable of establishing ultra-high-capacity links that may be used in conjunction with other types of point-to-point and/or point-to-multipoint links to build a multi-layer wireless mesh network. In another aspect, a system comprises multiple sites that each comprise a respective node configured to operate in a first mode in which the respective node engages in communication with a first backhaul node and docs not engage in communication with a second backhaul node, and dynamically switch from operating in the first mode to operating in a second mode in which the respective node engages in conununication with the second backltaul node and docs not engage in communication with the first backhaul node.
