On September 25, 2025, a major advance in the field of traditional medicine was celebrated at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University in Burkina Faso: the official launch of Melak , a local emulsion based on shea butter and honey, intended for the topical treatment of burns.
The result of a collaboration between OAPI and CEA -CFOREM (African Center of Excellence for Training, Research and Expertise in Pharmaceutical Sciences) via the project called SPIN-OFF PHARMA UJKZ. This first OAPI project, funded as part of structuring projects based on the use of IP as a lever for development, promises great prospects for the people of Burkina Faso by providing low-cost access to a natural African treatment.
Recognition for the continent's scientific research
Melak embodies an African pharmaceutical innovation based on the valorization of traditional knowledge and local resources. Patented OAPI No. 19447, this solution has demonstrated its effectiveness through rigorous clinical studies.
With an investment of 80% by OAPI and 20% by CEA-CFOREM, this collaboration demonstrates a shared commitment to promoting innovation to improve the living conditions of African populations.
For Mondésir OUALOU PANOUALA , Deputy Director General of OAPI, Melak represents much more than medical progress; this recognition of African scientific research stimulates the local economy by creating outlets for shea and honey producers, while strengthening the continent's health autonomy.
Through this initiative, OAPI reaffirms its support for traditional medicine and local innovation, actively contributing to a more resilient, autonomous and forward-looking Africa.
