The 8th Joint Commission between the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) was held this Thursday, March 13, 2025 in Yaoundé, marking a new stage in cooperation between the two continental institutions.
A high-level dialogue for the future of intellectual property in Africa
The opening ceremony was presided over by the Directors General of the two organizations, Mr. Denis BOHOUSSOU for OAPI and Mr. Bemanya TWEBAZE for ARIPO. In his address, Mr. TWEBAZE expressed his appreciation for the hospitality of his counterpart and particularly highlighted Mr. BOHOUSSOU's exceptional commitment to working tirelessly to advance intellectual property in Africa.
This strategic meeting, prepared by a meeting of experts held the day before, made it possible to address several crucial topics for the development of intellectual property on the African continent.
Significant progress and new perspectives
Among the highlights of this Joint Commission is the announcement of the entry into force, since January 1, 2025, of the examination of the substance of patents at OAPI – a major reform which strengthens the quality and value of the titles issued by the organization.
Discussions also focused on recent developments in intellectual property at the international and regional levels, as well as the substantial progress made in harmonizing the processes of registration and mutual recognition of titles between the two offices.
A strategic alliance to create a favorable environment
This Joint Commission demonstrates the commitment of both organizations to strengthen their cooperation, which has been established over several decades. Their shared objective remains the creation of an environment conducive to the protection and enhancement of intellectual property rights, not only in their respective member states, but also across the African continent.
OAPI and ARIPO thus reaffirm their determination to play a leading role in Africa's economic development by promoting innovation and creativity, essential pillars of sustainable and inclusive growth on the continent.
