The African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) organised on 10 April 2025 in Bissau a national seminar on the contribution of trademarks to business development in Guinea-Bissau, on the sidelines of its 24th consultation meeting between the Directorate General and the National Liaison Structures (NLS) of the member states.
Official recognition for a national symbol
The event was marked by an extraordinary Council of Ministers convened by the Prime Minister, DUARTE DE BARROS III. During this solemn ceremony, the Director General of OAPI, Denis BOHOUSSOU, officially presented the certificate of registration of the Designs and Models of the traditional loincloth "PANU DI PINTI", thus recognizing this textile as an element of the cultural and ancestral heritage of Guinea-Bissau.
This legal protection represents a major step towards preserving the country's traditional heritage. It highlights not only the cultural and economic importance of "PANU DI PINTI," but also the exceptional skill of the artisans who have perpetuated this traditional art for generations.
The Prime Minister encouraged the Director General of OAPI to continue this work of protection and affirmed Guinea-Bissau's commitment to protecting other emblematic products of the country.
OAPI strengthens its commitment to intellectual property
Through this initiative, OAPI reaffirms its mission to promote artisanal know-how as a driver of economic, social, and cultural development in its member states. The organization continues to pursue its objectives of enhancing the value of local products, strengthening the competitiveness of local businesses, and encouraging creativity and innovation within its territory.
