Promoting local products through Geographical Indications

Our African lands are brimming with exceptional agricultural and artisanal products that deserve to be valued for their true worth. OAPI supports producers in registering their products as Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs) to:

Transforming these local treasures into genuine, internationally recognized brands
Significantly improve producers' incomes
Preserving traditional know-how

A PGI identifies a product originating from a specific territory, whose quality, reputation or other characteristics are essentially attributable to that geographical origin.

Assessment and outlook:
8 geographical indications already registered in 6 countries
Penja pepper (Cameroon) is also recognized by the European Union
9 other products are currently undergoing certification in 5 states
Objective: at least 2 emblematic products registered as PGIs or collective marks in each of the 17 Member States
