From June 24 to 26, 2025, the town of Penja in the Moungo region of the Littoral Province in Cameroon resonated with the rhythm of the 1st Penja International Pepper Festival. Held under the patronage of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER), this event brought together producers, traditional chiefs, scientists, investors, businesses, and enthusiasts around a treasure of Cameroonian terroir.
OAPI, a committed player in the promotion of local products
The African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) was honored to participate in this festival as an official sponsor. Our presence reflects our ongoing commitment to the protection and promotion of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Africa. Penja Pepper, the first local product from sub-Saharan Africa to be registered as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) with OAPI and in the European Union, is a powerful symbol of this commitment.
For several years, we have been supporting the group of producers in the recognition, promotion and marketing of this exceptional product.
Three days celebrating local taste and know-how
For three days, the festival highlighted the traditional and sustainable methods of producing Penja pepper, renowned for its four varieties (black, white, red, and green) and its unique flavor. The event featured roundtables, exhibitions, tastings, culinary demonstrations, and opportunities for networking between industry professionals and visitors.
We enjoyed speaking with many participants and visitors at our stand and noted the growing interest in this labeled product, a true ambassador of Cameroonian culinary heritage.
A shared pride
For the mayor of Penja, this festival has established the town as "the capital of the best authentic pepper, of origin and quality in the world." A recognition we proudly welcome as a link that has contributed to the growth of this sector.
And then what?
OAPI reaffirms its commitment to supporting local producers and promoting GIs as levers for economic development, preservation of cultural heritage and international influence.
